The essential components of the fuel cell are very sensitive to particles and harmful gases. As an example, noxious gases such as sulfur dioxide (SO2) may react with the catalytic converter and cause unwanted deposits, which may, in turn, cause damage to the fuel cell.

The fuel cell’s high sensitivity to catalyst toxins is compounded by the use of costly precious metals such as platinum.
