Graphite Bipolar Plate - Ensinger

  • Ensinger has been developing very highly filled thermoplastics for use in bipolar plates for fuel cell stacks for many years together with our partner, the Center for Fuel Cell Technology (ZBT) in Duisburg.
  • The Ensinger formulation based on polypropylene (PP) is suitable, for example, for use in low-temperature fuel cells (PEMFC), Direct Methonal- Fuel Cells (DMFC) or in Redox Flow Batteries, the formulation based on polyphenylensulfide (PPS) is used in high-temperature PEM fuel cells or PAFC fuel cells as well as for plates for heat exchangers.
  • The base polymer of the HTE compounds is characterised by very good chemical resistance, low density, low creep properties and good stress crack resistance. The filler graphite enables the setting of a very high electrical and thermal conductivity.
  • Based on material behaviour and manufacturing process, it is possible to design the coolant flow field independantly from the anode or cathode flow field. This leads to an optimized homogeneneous temperature distribution.
  • Thermoplastic materials in general are recyclable. The question is whether such highly filled materials are also suitable for recycling. The clear answer is yes - our HTE compounds can be fully recycled and reused.
