Point Gas Leak Detection Consideration Services- MSA Safety

  • MSA's fire and gas mapping is a solution that assists in the evaluation of flame and gas risks within a processing facility and reducing these risks towards an acceptable risk profile.
  • Fire and gas mapping considers the application, sensor technologies, detector placement, zoning, probability of alarming with voting and non-voting systems, and the best measurement range to achieve the highest possible detection coverage - ultimately determining the optimal number of detectors.
  • Fire and gas mapping includes placing of detectors in appropriate locations to achieve the best possible detection coverage.
  • Fixed flame and gas detector systems are designed and installed to protect large and complex areas filled with process equipment from risks of combustible or toxic gas leaks, explosions and flames.
  • For these systems to be effective, it is important that they offer a high likelihood of detecting the presence of flame and gas hazards within monitored process areas.
  • Determining the optimal quantity and location of flame and gas detectors is therefore critical to ensure the detection system’s effectiveness.

Key benefits

  • Traditional Fire and Gas Mapping designs have been based on a single sensor being connected to the transmitter. But transmitter technology is now more advanced. The latest next generation technology, developed for the MSA ULTIMA® X5000 and General Monitors® S5000 allows for two gas sensors to be connected to a single transmitter. The ability for two sensors to be fitted to one transmitter, can offer the following benefits:
    • The 2 independent sensors can either be mounted directly on the transmitter housing or remotely, up to 100 metres (cable length) from the transmitter, providing optimum location for gas detection
    • For inaccessible sensors that need to be calibrated from a remote and safe location, MSA has a range of Remote Calibration Adaptors, that allow for these sensors to be accurately calibrated.
    • For applications where the sensors are fitted directly to the transmitter, but are inaccessible, the MSA X/S Connect App and a Bluetooth® device can be used to remotely access the transmitter’s menu.
    • The sensors can either be the same type, should a single gas risk be present in the area or they can be different, e.g. one H2 sensor and the other a O2 sensor.
    • As less transmitters, cables, and accessories are required, this can significantly reduce the initial CAPEX costs, as well as lowering the overall cost of installing the gas detectors.
