Hyfindr Tech Talk #38 - Hydrogen Ready Thread Sealing Solutions for Leak-Free Pipe Connections

In this tech talk, Steven had the pleasure of discussing about the Hydrogen Ready Thread Sealing Solutions for Leak-Free Pipe Connections for hydrogen economy with Simone Zanetti, Global Application Engineer at Henkel.

Learn about Hydrogen Ready Thread Sealing Solutions for Leak-Free Pipe Connections

Steven Oji and Simone Zanetti from Henkel discuss thread sealants, a crucial technology for joining pipes without leaks, essential in the hydrogen economy. Thread sealants are one of several methods for connecting pipes, alongside radial press fittings and welding. While welding is cheaper but permanent, thread sealants are versatile and can be disassembled, though they are prone to leaks without proper sealing. Zanetti explains the mechanics of thread sealants, highlighting the necessity of filling gaps between threads to prevent leaks, especially under conditions like vibration, temperature changes, and high pressure. Henkel's solution involves an anaerobic adhesive that cures in the absence of oxygen, forming a solid seal that can withstand pressures up to 1000 bar. Despite curing, the connections can be disassembled using heat. The discussion emphasizes the widespread use of threaded connections in hydrogen systems and the importance of reliable sealing for safety and efficiency.

Threaded connections are advantageous because they are easy to assemble and disassemble, making them ideal for maintenance and replacements. However, they are susceptible to leaks if not properly sealed. The discussion delves into the mechanics of thread sealants, where gaps between the threads must be filled to prevent leakage, especially under conditions like vibration, bending, temperature fluctuations, and high pressure. Zanetti highlights that perfect metal-to-metal connections are impossible due to necessary assembly gaps, thus requiring effective sealing solutions.

Henkel’s solution involves an anaerobic adhesive that cures in the absence of oxygen and in contact with metal, forming a solid, plastic-like material that seals the entire threaded surface. This adhesive can withstand temperatures over 200 degrees Celsius and pressures exceeding 1000 bar, making it suitable for high-pressure hydrogen applications. The adhesive remains stable in the presence of oxygen, which is why Henkel’s product bottles are half-filled with air to prevent premature curing.
