Hyfindr Tech Talk # 30 - Hydrogen Fittings - Different Types of Fittings - Hydrogen Technology

In this tech talk, Steven had the pleasure of discussing about the about Hydrogen Fittings with Enric Palau, General Manager and Director, Redfluid.

Learn about hydrogen fittings

Steven Oji and Enric Palau discusses about various types of hydrogen fittings, including twin ferrule, single ferrule, cone and thread, welding connections, and the importance of choosing the right fitting based on application and pressure requirements. The cone and thread fittings, suitable for high-pressure applications, are expected to gain popularity in the coming years.

Further in the discussion, different types of fittings are also explained.

Twin Ferrule: These fittings have two rings or "ferrules" inside. While they are easy to install, once tightened, the ferrule permanently attaches to the tube.

Single Ferrule: Similar to twin ferrule but has just one ferrule. This type follows a standard, making it interchangeable and widely used, especially in Germany.

Cone and Thread: Enric's favorite, these fittings are suitable for high-pressure applications, often seen in refueling stations. They require a specific threading and a cone on the tube for installation. Though expensive now, with increased demand, the cost is expected to decrease.

Welding Connections: These are cheap and standard but might need tests like x-rays after installation. Welding connections are permanent; to disconnect, one has to cut through them.

Considering future trends, the cone and thread fittings will gain popularity due to their high-pressure capacity and expected decrease in price as production scales up.
