Hyfindr Tech Talk #2 - SOEC/SOFC Heat Exchangers

In this tech talk, Steven had the pleasure of discussing SOEC/SOFC Heat Exchangers with Stephan Pflugfelder, Head of Business Development and Innovation Management at smk.

Learn about Fuel Cell Inverter and Electric Motor Controllers

Steven Oji and Stephan Pflugfelder discuss the hydrogen heat exchanger technology for SOFC/SOEC systems. He explains that SOFC technology is capable of producing power with over 60% efficiency using hydrogen. He demonstrates a heat exchanger designed specifically for use in SOFC systems, which can operate at high temperatures of around 700-900 degrees Celsius. Stephan also discusses the different types of fuel cell systems, including PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) and SOFC, and explains the difference between SOFC and SOEC (Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell) technology. He also shows a diagram illustrating the use of heat exchangers in the SOFC process, where hot gases produced by the reaction of hydrogen and air in the fuel cell are use to heat up fresh gases entering the stack. Engineers and anyone interested in fuel cell technology will likely find this video informative and educational. Stephan also discusses the importance of considering thermomechanical stress and the use of thicker heat transferring plates and laser welding in the design and production of the heat exchangers to ensure their longevity and safety. Testing and validation of the heat exchangers is also discussed.
