In this tech talk, Steven had the pleasure of discussing Hydrogen Detectors with Claudio Fecarotta, FGFD BDM New Energies, International at MSA Safety.
Learn about Hydrogen Gas Detectors
Steven Oji and Claudio Fecarotta discuss the technology and special products, such as the Ultrasonic Gas Leak Detector (UGLD). Claudio from MSA also explains the conventional gas detector, which works with either a catalytic sensor or electrochemical to detect even low hydrogen concentrations up to 1000 ppm, and the flame detector, which uses infrared and ultraviolet sensors to detect transparency flame. Together, these three devices using various sensing technologies form the hydrogen package technology, providing a comprehensive layer of protection against hydrogen leakages and flames.
Claudio presents four different technologies that can be used to detect and protect assets and people from the dangers of hydrogen leakage, the four technologies were in three different products brought with him: the Ultrasonic Gas Leak Detector (UGLD), a conventional gas detector and a flame detector. Claudio explains how each technology works and the benefits they provide.
The Ultrasonic Gas Leak Detector (UGLD) is able to detect hydrogen leakage and can cover an area of up to 28 meters, meaning that even if a leakage is not within sight of the detector, it can still detect it. This detector uses an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to distinguish between different background noises and hydrogen leakages to avoid false alarms. The conventional gas detector, which is a catalytic technology, works by measuring the %LEL when hydrogen hits it. This detector can also detect hydrogen up to 1000 PPM with a different technology call electrochemical principle. The flame detector uses infrared and ultraviolet sensor to detect hydrogen flames. It is tuned to a wavelength of 2.95 micrometers, which is different from hydrocarbon flame emissions, and is able to detect the hydrogen invisible flames.
