Hyfindr Tech Talk #3 - Fuel Cell Inverter Electric Motor Controllers

In this tech talk, Steven had the pleasure of discussing Fuel Cell Inverter with Jon Duroudier, Technical Manager at ePowerlabs.

Learn about Fuel Cell Inverter and Electric Motor Controllers

Steven Oji and Jon Duroudier discuss the traction inverter, a device used to control AC motors in electric and hydrogen vehicles. The inverter converts DC power from the fuel cell or battery into AC power, which is then used to drive the motor. Duroudier explains that there are different types of inverters for different applications within a powertrain system, including those for controlling compressors and fans in the fuel cell system. He also describes the role of the inverter in regulating the speed and torque of the motor.

The traction inverter developed by ePowerlabs is a 400 volt device with a nominal power of 150 kilowatts, and is currently being used in the development of electric and hydrogen vehicles. Jon Duroudier discusses the features of their water-cooled traction inverter, which is used to control AC motors in electric and hydrogen vehicles. Duroudier explains that the inverter has a quick release system for easy cable integration and can withstand operating temperatures of up to 60 degrees Celsius.

He also mentions that the inverter is equipped with tools for calibration and diagnostics, and can be remotely monitored and diagnosed through a connection to the cloud. This allows for fleet operators to have access to data on the inverter and powertrain performance. Duroudier concludes the presentation by highlighting the importance of inverters in the overall performance of a vehicle and the role they play in the hydrogen economy.
