COMEC Innovative's semi-standard Filament Winding Hydrogen machine is designed for manufacturing Type IV hydrogen pressure vessels for mobility. The system uses Towpreg winding and is configured for high winding accuracy, speed and productivity. COMEC publishes a hydrogen-tank configuration with mandrels up to 500 mm diameter, up to 2.5 m between chucks, eight bobbins, up to four mandrels, five axes and an average winding speed of 300 m/min. Automated cutting and a Towpreg heating system are available as options for customer-specific production requirements.

COMEC INNOVATIVE S.R.L. COMEC Innovative S.r.l., based in Chieti, Italy and originally established in 1965 as a machine tool manufacturer before transitioning to composites in 2014, manufactures special machines for composite materials production, including Towpreg, Prepreg, Filament Winding, ATL, and AFP machines, with dedicated projects for hydrogen tank manufacturing. The company's R&D department is developing new-generation filament winding machines specifically for Type IV hydrogen pressure vessel production, alongside dry filament winding and Aerosol Jet Printing (AJP) technologies capable of printing strain gauges directly onto high-pressure hydrogen tank surfaces (achieving element sizes under 10 μm) to monitor tank surface deformation and safety. COMEC's high-speed towpreg impregnation line reaches process speeds of 100 m/min and can produce over 100 tons/year of towpreg across two production shifts. The company, an H2IT (Italian Association for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells) member, regularly exhibits at Italy's Hydrogen Expo conference in Piacenza.
