H2 Heating for energy storage facilities - TUTCO

  • As the shift to renewable energy accelerates, iron is emerging as a promising energy carrier and storage medium. In this approach, hydrogen produced from renewable electricity is used to reduce iron oxide (Fe₂O₃) to elemental iron (Fe) in a process known as Direct Reduced Iron (DRI).
  • The resulting iron stores energy chemically and can later be oxidized to release that energy, enabling a carbon-free, reversible energy cycle.
  • A critical part of this process is the heating of hydrogen gas to high temperatures driving the reduction reaction. This is achieved using powerful high-temperature electrical inline gas heaters.
  • When powered by renewable electricity, these heaters help maintain the zero-emissions nature of the entire cycle.
