REMA Be1 is a stand-alone plug & play 2.5 kW AEM electrolyzer, including water pretreatment and hydrogen purification modules. It only requires tap water and an electrical plug to provide pure and dry hydrogen, targeting seamless integration in any established processes. The system produces roughly 1 kg of hydrogen per day, making it ideal for small industry and individuals. It offers high efficiency and purity, with a footprint of 67 x 65 x 44 cm and a 20-year lifespan. The system is designed to be user-friendly and efficient, ensuring reliable hydrogen production with minimal maintenance.

Use Cases

  • Small industry
  • Individuals

Capabilities

  • Produces hydrogen at 1 kg/day (0.5 Nm³/h) under stated operating conditions.
  • Operates as a self-contained AEM electrolyzer system with integrated water pretreatment and purification modules.
  • Delivers hydrogen at 35 bar outlet pressure, enabling downstream storage or use without additional compression (within that pressure limit).
REMA Hydrogen REMA (H2REMA Sarl), an EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne) spin-out startup founded in 2023-2024 and headquartered in Lausanne/Geneva, Switzerland, develops and commercializes proprietary membrane-less electrolysis technology designed to make green hydrogen production more affordable and efficient, with the company's mission to enable the universal use of green hydrogen for a sustainable future. By leveraging Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) technology and extensive fluid mechanics expertise, REMA has optimized fluid-flow management within the electrolysis stack, ensuring better distribution of the reactant (water) and more efficient removal of products (hydrogen and oxygen) while eliminating the need for expensive membranes through the use of fluid mechanics and high operating temperatures -- achieving efficiency outperforming current electrolysers by 10-20% while reducing prices and simplifying construction and industrialization. Led by CEO Steven Schenk and CTO Ioakeim Sioutis (both EPFL alumni), REMA has successfully validated its technology at small scale with a demonstrator producing 1 kg of hydrogen per day, receiving CHF 150,000 from Venture Kick to accelerate development toward launching its inaugural electrolyzer by 2025-2027, deployed in pilot projects in Western Switzerland, with the REMA We1 planned as a stand-alone 50kW AEM electrolyzer for hydrogen production targeting Q3 2027 release, ideal for medium-scale units producing around 1kg of hydrogen per hour for industrial applications and refuelling stations. Aiming to reduce green hydrogen production costs from the current $6-12 per kilogram range down to $2 per kilogram (a critical threshold for widespread adoption, given green hydrogen currently constitutes less than 1% of total hydrogen production), REMA continues focusing on deploying several demonstrators at customer sites while scaling up its membrane-less electrolysis system to meet full customer needs.
