In this tech talk, Steven had the pleasure of discussing Fuel Cell Systems - Optimization - Balance of Plant BoP with Christoph Ley, Project Manager at AE Driven Solutions.
Learn about Fuel Cell Systems - Optimization - Balance of Plant BoP Part 2
Steven Oji and Christoph Ley discuss the optimization of fuel cell systems for maximum performance and efficiency. The different components of the system, including the anode system, cathode system, and cooling system, and how they can be improved to increase power output are weighed. The topic specifically focuses on the importance of the fuel cell compressor and how it affects efficiency and power generation. The power demands of a system, including the use of a high voltage battery system in combination with the fuel cell system for peak power demands are also deeply discussed.
This Hyfindr Tech Talk then focuses on the fuel cell compressor, a critical component of the cathode system. It supplies air into the stack, which is necessary to generate power from the fuel cell stack. The compressor's size impacts efficiency and power generation. Increasing the pressure on both the anode and cathode sides can increase power output, but this must be controlled to avoid damaging the membrane inside the stack.
The power demands of a fuel cell system are discussed. A load profile and note are examined that there are peaks that require extra power. To meet these demands, they suggest combining a fuel cell system with a high voltage battery system. This would allow the fuel cell system to run on a very efficient point, while the high voltage battery system provides additional power for peak demands.
