Hydrogen Breakaways are mounted along or at the end of the hose connecting the refueling nozzle and the larger hydrogen dispenser unit in a hydrogen refueling station (HRS). Their function is to safely disconnect these two if an excessive pulling force is applied to the hose. This may happen if the nozzle is still connected to the vehicle when it attempts to depart from the refueling location. In this way breakaways are an important safety element helping to avert leakage and damage to the vehicle receptacle, the nozzle, the dispenser and any other element of the refueling unit.
