The VA 550 is an insertion-type thermal mass flow meter for installation in existing compressed air or gas lines from 3/4″ to >DN 1000. It measures flow, total consumption, velocity, and temperature, with configurable gas types including compressed air, nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrous oxide, natural gas, helium, propane, methane, biogas, and hydrogen (H2). The sensor has no moving parts, negligible pressure loss, stainless-steel wetted parts, and a robust aluminum die-cast housing. It supports measurement ranges up to 224 m/s, operating pressure up to 50 bar as standard or 100 bar special version, and media temperatures up to 180 °C. Standard outputs include 4–20 mA, pulse output, and RS 485 Modbus-RTU, with optional Ethernet Modbus-TCP, PoE, M-Bus, HART, Profibus DP, Profinet, and IO-Link.
Use Cases
- Flow measurement in existing compressed air lines
- Flow measurement in industrial gas lines
- Hydrogen gas flow measurement, with real-gas adjustment required for H2
- Natural gas flow measurement, with optional DVGW approval up to 16 bar
- Compressor and compressed-air system monitoring
- Outdoor compressed-air and gas measurement applications
- Applications requiring remote access via Modbus, Ethernet, HART, M-Bus, Profibus, Profinet, or IO-Link
Capabilities
- Measures thermal mass flow in compressed air and gases
- Displays four measured values: flow, total consumption, velocity, and temperature
- Provides access to measured values and settings via Modbus-RTU
- Supports configuration and diagnostics through the display, PI 500 hand-held device, PC service software, or remote diagnosis
- Supports selectable gas types including hydrogen (H2)
- Supports real-gas adjustment for selected gas types
- Can be installed or removed under pressure without disconnecting or emptying the line
- Supports optional integrated pressure sensor configurations for selected versions
- Supports optional bus and digital interfaces: Ethernet Modbus-TCP, PoE, M-Bus, HART, IO-Link, Profibus DP, and Profinet
